Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are many different reasons why you may need a tooth extraction. One of the most common is a wisdom tooth extraction. Most of the time, our mouths aren’t able to take on an extra set of molars. If they erupt, they usually cause the other teeth in the mouth to become cramped and crooked. Sometimes, they don’t erupt properly and stay stuck under the surface. These need to be surgically removed to prevent pain and infection.

At our office, we practice conservative treatment. We want to save your natural tooth structure as much as possible. However, sometimes it’s better for your oral health if we remove a tooth. An extremely damaged or decayed tooth causes pain and other issues with your mouth. If a dental crown or other restoration isn’t enough to repair it, we’ll extract the tooth. Our office offers many tooth replacement options, like dental implants, for your missing tooth.

Not everyone’s smiles develop in the same way. Some people even have extra teeth, and the mouth isn’t big enough to fit all of them. If a tooth puts extra pressure on the surrounding teeth, we may recommend removal. There are some instances where Invisalign or other orthodontic treatment requires tooth removal so that the treatment is successful.

Tooth Extraction Treatment

Tooth extractions can be simple or complex. Simple tooth extractions remove teeth seen above the gum line. These types of extractions often only require an anesthetic. Complex tooth extractions remove teeth that are at or below the gum line. To extract teeth that are not fully immersed, we make an incision in the gums to remove the teeth.

For extraction treatment, we first administer local anesthesia to numb the mouth. Once we remove the tooth or teeth, we cover the socket with gauze. If needed, we may place a few stitches into the socket. We can provide dental implants or restorations if we remove an infected tooth or teeth.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow behind the molars in the back of the mouth. They typically grow when patients are in their late teens to early 20s. Many patients do not find any problems when their wisdom teeth emerge. However, wisdom teeth can become impacted if they do not have enough room to erupt fully. Impacted wisdom teeth can damage adjacent teeth once they emerge. We will take x-rays at routine appointments to track wisdom teeth’ growth.
